Many people must have heard about bed sores once in their life, but what exactly bed sores are?
Bed sores- also known as pressure ulcers or pressure sores are skin wounds which are caused by many linking factors. Pressure sores are skin lesions that are caused as a result of protracted pressure on the skin. There are many other factors that cause bed sores on the skin; humidity, prolonged pressure on the skin, cuts, age and friction. Bed soresĀ  more frequently develop on the skin that cover the bones or cartilaginous areas such as elbow, ankle, hips and heels.
Preventing bed sores are the most important thing because it can be fatal at times. The people who are at risk of pressure sores are the ones with health conditions that restricts them to amend their positions. People who lack mobility are possibly able to get affected by bed sores because they are mostly on wheel chairs and are only confined to their beds for a longer time period. Bed sores take less time to appear on the skin and are mostly complex to treat.
The aged people have much thinner skin which is more weak to get damaged from even slight pressures. The poor nutrition of elderly people results in less efficient healing of the skin. Less mobility adds up to the vulnerability of getting pressure sores. People who are in a coma and cannot move their body, who have spinal injuries and cannot change positions frequently, who don’t take proper diet after any sickness and who have diabetes are more prone to get bed sores on their skin. The bones that are less padded by the flesh could be the area where people can get bed sores.
How to prevent bed sores:
There are numerous approaches to prevent bed sores that will help promote healing. Smoking can negatively affect the healing process of bed sores because the nicotine people inhale while smoking reduces the amount of oxygen in blood. There are several ways to prevent pressure sores. People must keep in mind that they need to re-position regularly to avoid bedsores and if they have any medical condition which does make them confined to their beds or wheelchairs, try to change position and move themselves with the help of someone at small intervals of time.
To avoid or get prevented from friction, avoid using normal mattresses, use air, foam or water or gel mattresses. If you have pressure sores on your skin, it is important to clean or wipe the wound to prevent it from more complex infections. There are several stages of wounds or bed sores; they are divided into categories like stage 1 2 and later stages. The 1stĀ  stage of pressure sores can be cured by cleansing the wound with water and mild soap, but keep in mind that the open source must treat with care and in accordance with the doctor’s prescribed products and they do not need any dressing. The proper dressing of skin wounds is the key to prevent further bed sores to develop. The 2nd stage skin wounds or bed sores are treated generally with transparent dressings that grasp all moisture and allows skin to grow well. Other contaminated pressure sores can be treated with ointments and creams prescribed by the doctors.
People who have bed sores should keep in mind if they are using elevated beds like the ones in hospitals then they should not elevate the bed more than 30 degrees to prevent the skin from shearing.
To prevent your skin from developing bed sores, bring up that courage in yourself to pull up your back from either the wheelchair or bed. Pressure sores are much more easier to prevent than to cure. Even the consistent preventive cure cannot stop the bed sores to develop on skin but once they are developed, they are not easy to make them vanish from your skin. Take care of cartilaginous skin and make sure you re-position yourself at proper intervals of time to get rid of bed sores.
